They reported that 140 lodges of the Teton Lakota were camped on the Bad. While the men were cooking their evening meal, three Lakota boys swam across the river to their campsite. The expedition made camp that night in a cottonwood grove on the east (north) side of the Missouri, across from the mouth of Antelope Creek. It has been speculated that the Teton Lakota, camped near the Bad River just above, were signaling other tribal members to join them He saw herds of buffalo in the distance, and smoke from a prairie fire. Captain Clark walked along the shore of Elk Island, which was covered with cottonwood trees, red berries, and grapes. The expedition proceeded upriver from Chapelle Creek. The flag of the United States was flown for the first time over present-day South Dakota at this council with the Lakota. The confrontation was diffused, largely through the efforts of Chief Black Buffalo, and the expedition continued. The Lakota controlled this section of the river and surrounding land. The interactions teetered on the brink of becoming seriously hostile. There representatives of the United States of America met for the first time officials of the great Lakota Nation. One of the most significant events of the entire Lewis & Clark Voyage of Discovery took place at what is now Lilly Park in the city of Fort Pierre, where the Bad River enters the Missouri in central South Dakota. Other highlights included Lakota living history exhibits at Fischers Lilly Park and two performances by Brule, acclaimed Native American music and dance group. The Lakota Heritage Society presented a historical re-enactment and cultural heritage pageant featuring the famous encounter from the perspective of the Lakota people. Two hundred years later, the community of Fort Pierre, South Dakota and members of the Lakota Nation commemorated that first encounter with BAD RIVER GATHERING September 24-26, 2004 at the mouth of the Bad River. For the next five days the two Nations parlayed at the mouth of the Bad River, in feasting, negotiations, and ultimately the armed stand-off which, but for the peace-making efforts of Chief Black Buffalo, might have ended the Expedition. The new Southern Prairie Region includes two already existing chapters: the Greater St. The Southern Prairie Region covers six states: Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and southwestern Illinois.Īt the time of restructuring, some smaller chapters decided to dissolve while other chapters remained in existence within their region and sometimes hold events primarily for members in their chapter areas. The region was created in late 2021 when the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation reorganized its structure into regions.
